Today, Debbie Chen, Executive Director of OCA-Greater Houston, released this statement about the signing into law of the new Congressional map for the state of Texas:

The political power of the Asian American Pacific Islander Community in Texas was significantly diminished today when Governor George Abbott signed into law the extremely gerrymandered Congressional map for next year’s election.

Asian Americans in the Greater Houston area already faced barriers accessing representation and resources because their communities were splintered across several districts. This new map further dilutes Asian American voting power in this area, further separates Asian American communities, and makes it harder for people to get the resources they need to live their lives in dignity and security.

For example, the district with the current largest percentage of Asian American voters in our area, District 7 in southwest Houston, is being twisted to remove Asian American neighborhoods and reduce the number of Asian Americans in the district below 20%. This will make it even more difficult for the Asian American community there to secure influence in the political process and get the resources they need.

We look forward to working with our allies to challenge this map in court before it can be inflicted upon the people of Texas in next year’s elections.
